Building brighter futures for 40 years: Ann’s story

2 McKye Street in Waverton was one of the first properties acquired by Lower North Shore Community Housing Association in the mid-1980s.

Originally built as lodgings for the Navy, the complex sat dormant for three years before being renovated by the Department of Housing and passed on to be managed by the Community Tenancy Scheme.

Ann has lived in her home for 33 years, watching the suburb of Waverton change around her. The old Gasworks is now a residential estate, the local businesses have changed ownership. But thanks to the stability of community housing, Ann has been able to stay put.

“The reality is, there’s no way that I’d be able to live in the real world if I didn’t have this place,” Ann says. “To my children, this is home. This is the first time we felt secure, we felt stable. Just a nice community, with a much brighter future than I felt before.”
