Gardening feature – Chloe’s compost

My best tip for gardening is composting your food scraps in the garden. I’ve got two methods for this: a worm tower or trench composting.

I made a DIY worm tower from a 40-50cm long piece of PVC pipe with about 15 holes drilled in at random in the bottom third of the tube. You put the holey end vertically in the ground, ensuring the soil covers all the holes. Then pop a fitted cap on the top to keep it sealed. You can also buy these from Bunnings: look for ‘Worm Tower’ or ‘Worm Cafe’.

All you do is add your fruit and vegetable scraps, tea bags etc to the top of the tube and re-cover with the lid. The worms in the soil enter the tube via the small holes to munch the scraps and distribute the waste through the soil, making your soil rich and nutrient-dense.

If you run out of room in the tubes, simply dig a hole in your garden bed or pot and plant your scraps. You might get a few unintended vegetable plants, though. I’ve ended up growing carrots, capsicum, and shallots all by trench composting my scraps.

Composting is a free and easy way to nourish your soil, and its resident worms, and ensure you gain a great harvest of flowers and food every year.
