Art exhibition examines impact of affordable housing on vulnerable Australians

It’s a unique take on the importance of affordable housing – an art exhibition by tenants of one of the country’s largest providers of community housing.

The “No Place Like ǿƵ” exhibition is a biennial exhibition and will showcase artworks that explore the theme of “home”, highlighting the life-changing importance of affordable, safe, and secure housing.

Not for profit Link Wentworth provides housing to more than 10,000 Sydney residents every night.

Link Wentworth CEO Andrew McAnulty said the organisation’s model of housing goes beyond providing shelter to creating a real sense of community through initiatives like the art show.

“We know how life-changing and vital it is for residents who have been doing it tough to not only find a secure home but to tap into a network, a community,” Mr McAnulty said.

“Link Wentworth tenants are given access to wraparound services, including mental health support, and help finding suitable long-term accommodation if required. Many of our properties also feature shared or common areas, and gardens, to help foster that sense of togetherness and belonging which can be so restorative and healing.”

Art classes have been offered to residents in the lead up to the exhibitions, and submissions are accepted from all levels of artistic experience.

Mr McAnulty said there will be two exhibitions open to the public – in Chatswood in July, and in Penrith in August.

“The exciting thing for residents, and for the public, is that many of the artworks will be available for sale at the exhibitions. We know how much of an impact having an affordable home can have on someone’s life and we can’t wait to see how that emotion is captured through beautiful art.”

Genevieve is a Link Wentworth resident living in the Hawkesbury region of New South Wales. A life-long painter and drawer, Genevieve entered the art competition after her Tenancy Manager noticed the collection of artworks in her home. Genevieve says entering the art competition gives her an excuse to create new and fresh work, and she is grateful to display her art without having to pay gallery fees.

“I’ll keep entering it from now on, every two years. Makes you want to enter it again. It’s another way of getting my work out there and getting known.”
